A Consideration of Depth
What does depth truly mean? What does depth mean within the context of an art or discipline? Within the quality of our work and lives, in the realm of learning, personal development, and mastery? Furthermore, what does it require of us, and what are some of the fundamental qualities which in some way define depth and speak to some of the elements that must be considered in its cultivation and eventual attainment?
Depth is an elemental concept within the realm of mastery because pondering what it means to achieve great depth in an art or discipline is the guiding principle towards the refinement and development of both our learning process, as well as our skills and knowledge in the right areas to achieve a level of refinement and quality in our understanding and self-expression within our chosen art or discipline which can be said to in some way possess depth.
I say “achieve depth” as if it is something that can be attained, which really isn’t true. In reality it is more of a consistent movement towards depth because at each stage along our path there are new levels of depth to be penetrated to, corresponding with greater heights of awareness and understanding, quality in our knowledge, skill, and ability, as well as degrees of refinement. Thus in reality depth can be said to be essentially a certain orientation in our learning and growth processes.
But it is more than that, it is the ongoing process of refinement of both our self-expression and ourselves. When we are seeking depth of skill and understanding, what usually comes with this search is the mysterious passion which drives us to master something, which really must be there for us to succeed in this movement towards depth. It is the desire to create without inhibition in the art in order to express some part of ourselves we instinctively sense. Or we discover these desires, inclinations, and abilities along the path of learning which in itself is the essence of the process of self-discovery.
Following those leads of curiosity, passion, and desire is what fundamentally guides us towards some sense of identity and truth in our self-expression through our arts, which feels genuine and natural to who we are. This feels important to note here because these feelings and general attitude describes at least some of the reasons that should drive us in our search for depth and mastery in any art. Without that sense of passion, curiosity, desire, truth and genuineness to guide us, what reasons can we muster with enough power to justify and endure the difficulty of seeking to truly master something? For that process of depth towards mastery of anything is ultimately one of self-realization as we transcend our internal barriers via the discovery of ourselves through our chosen art.
Depth :: A Movement Towards Quality
The process towards depth is a movement towards quality. This is perhaps the chief reason why depth is such an important principle to cultivate in our lives. We can achieve quality in a number of ways, such as in the quality of our behavior and consistent mood (which we can specifically develop and enhance with various techniques) or the quality of our daily lives which is a reflection of our daily discipline, rhythms and routines. On the other hand as part of depth we are literally refining the quality of our skills and self-expression, or the quality of our understanding in some area.
Reading a new book is an increase in our quality of understanding of that new subject, or listening to a new book upon on a subject you have already studied in some depth. That new knowledge contributes directly to a greater understanding, and each new article you read can to some degree improve your understanding of the discipline as a whole, just as each new song you learn how to play is an addition to your musical repertoire and improves the quality and depth of your understanding of music.
However, the greater implications of a sense of quality reside in the conscious refinement of ourselves, knowledge, and skills. For people in general, one quality that binds us all together, aside from the inevitability of death, is our desire to express ourselves. That is what our individual lives literally are: an expression of who we are as people. No matter what you do, your life is a reflection of you. And the quality of your life is a direct reflection of where (and what) you are as a person in this moment.
The deeper an individual gets in their own personal study of an art, in general, the higher the quality of their understanding and work. The more extensive their knowledge gradually becomes, the deeper and more expansive their understanding of their art becomes, which then can also result in greater precision in our self-expression.
It appears to manifest itself as a gradual accumulation of pieces of a subject over time, and at certain stages along the way, once the number of pieces accumulate to stages of critical mass, seem to periodically and spontaneously connect with one another and break us through to new stages of depth in understanding, skill, ability, complexity, and creation through the increased quantity of interconnections of information existing within us and exploding through as a higher degree of virtuosity in the consideration, breadth of understanding, and unique practice of our art.
In every art these same changes occur in the same process. While the skills may be superficially different, the principles guiding each are the same, and the movement is a general progression towards fluidity and creativity of expression, as well as quality. The “intellectual arts” are just as creative as the more traditional forms of “art” found in music, visual or performance arts. They each require an equal degree of their own technical skill and knowledge, precision, as well as vision and creativity.
Technical skill in the realm of physics translates to fluency in the language of mathematics, as well as the vast quantity of laws, principles, theories, and models which comprise what we know thus far about nature and reality, at least through scientific investigation. Likewise, the great technical skill of a painter, actor, director, or musician at the highest level is no less than the technical skills of a scientist, just achieved and expressed within the context of a different medium requiring a different and unique set of skills and knowledge which that discipline. In every case, each art and discipline is a collection of knowledge and skills, which can ultimately be refined towards the same level of precision and quality.
Over time we simplify and clarify what we have learned along the way. Always accumulating new knowledge related to our subject of study, or related at least to our interests, but also refining it. This refinement is the simplification, clarification, and in some cases development of what we already know. All new knowledge that is taken in are seeds of knowledge that require time and attention to take root in our mind within the body of knowledge we have already curated, or as the first seeds. The watering being the attention that we pour on these seeds of knowledge from time to time as we explore, expand, and build upon them which eventually grow and become part of the body of knowledge we hold internally. This is part of the process of depth, as well as quality.
Depth :: The Dynamic Vanguard of Learning
One of the byproducts of seeking depth is that it invariably requires of us a degree of self-awareness that must be raised at each successive level of our learning and mastery process. It requires that we break through the plateaus we reach at various stages in our learning process, because in a literal sense, depth is the next level of knowledge or skill, or perhaps the next level of clarity in our understanding. After a period of taking in knowledge generally and widely, we must look deeper into our skill-set in order to proceed towards greater depth, into the knowledge of the discipline itself, and seek refinement and simplification, as well as synthesis and clarity.
This is done by analyzing what we know. The more internalization directed aspect of this process is to assess the quality of our skills or thoroughness of our understanding of a subject. We consider our strengths and weaknesses, areas where we are more or less proficient, as well as assess gaps in our knowledge, and also how and where to improve our skills. On the other hand, it is equally as important to decide what to learn next. How to branch off to different but related subjects in order to really refine our understanding of something to attain both broader and deeper comprehension. But also how to approach brand new subjects, how to take in knowledge differently (or take in different types of knowledge), as well as how to approach subjects thoroughly and efficiently from the outset.
We will reach barriers innumerable times. We will come upon barriers of ignorance, where we literally do not know anything about a certain subject or branch or style within our discipline. Or we will come up to barriers in our skill, when we are literally unable to do something… yet. Maybe it is a type of music, a branch of mathematics, some topic that for whatever reason we cannot wrap our heads around, or maybe it’s a back-flip. Depth – and all of the skills and considerations that go into depth – are built and achieved at these very stages of facing our limitations and ignorance. What it is important is that we condition ourselves with a mindset of seeking at each stage new, creative, and innovative ways to clamber over walls, circumvent obstacles, and penetrate barriers. As well as to assess these obstacles and their solutions accurately and intelligently, with the right attitude towards them.
It is literally at these barriers where all new learning takes place. It is also here where our will, commitment, and determination are tested, but also where we learn the most. Depth, you could say, is the dynamic process taking place at these barriers, at the forefront of your own personal degree of knowledge and skill. This is how knowledge is attained, and how a body of knowledge is developed. Even in the academic sense, this type of knowledge and depth is not attained passively. You cannot just read books and attain deep internal understanding. For to achieve great depth in any field we must accumulate, synthesize, amalgamate, and also isolate, separate, and clarify innumerable details of varying degrees of importance within a vast body of knowledge. We must apply our attention to the subject so thoroughly as to know it intrinsically as an extension of ourselves. We must achieve fluidity.
This can be done either analytically or intuitively, yet in neither case does it occur passively. Learning is an activity that an individual does, not something that happens to them, such as by listening to an audiobook, reading a book, or taking in a lecture. Ultimately we will end up isolating specific techniques, skills, or knowledge (topics) within our art studying them to the point of “touching quality” which is the first stage of real understanding and skill. But this sense of quality is also the first stage also stage necessary before it is appropriate to move on. Over time with diligent practice and study we build the skill necessary to express ourselves in our art, whether that is music, history, or painting. Which, aside from the quality of our relationships, is one of the greatest contributors to quality in our lives life.
Devotion: The Requirement For Depth
Above all, the greatest requirement for depth is commitment; however a better word could perhaps be devotion. Regardless of the specifics of any individual art or path, one thing is certain: depth is something we must earn. It requires an extraordinary amount of patience, persistence, resilience, and determination because it is not easy. At each stage along the way we will face significant obstacles. It is not a ‘comfortable’ experience because we are always reaching just beyond our level of knowledge and skill, which in a sense means constantly failing in that we are not yet able to do what we are trying to do at the moment. The moment we stop having these difficulties is the moment that our progress towards depth has been halted.
Depth takes time, dedication and commitment. The way that I like to look at it is as if we are paying our dues to the spirit of the discipline, to the spirit of physics, or music if you like, proving our commitment, our dedication, the strength of our devotion to claim this height of knowledge and skill. Simply doing the work required to attain what it is that we desire, the effort required to learn and grow in the right ways to satisfy and fulfill some deep desire of ourselves as human beings, as spiritual beings, in some form of understanding or self expression. I find that this perspective cultivates an attitude of humility, devotion, and real consideration which is the essential spirit required to achieve depth and mastery. A deep love of the art and discipline we are inspired to commit our time and lives to, and the care to refine our practice of it.
This doesn’t mean we can only learn one discipline at a time, nor that we must curtail our interests, nor that we must choose one thing now absolutely for the rest of our lives. That is not the path aligned with the requirements for depth, because depth in an art or discipline, or in our lives for that matter, is inextricably linked with our process of self-realization as a holistic expression of what and who we are, founded upon an ongoing process of discovering and refining who and what we are.
By denying our interests, passions, and curiosity we are quite literally ignoring the most important guiding principles which will bring us towards depth in our arts. As it is our unique voice and nature which defines our contribution to whatever fields we create within, denying any part of ourselves is not the answer. Nonetheless, keep in mind that the more things you try to master at the same time the slower your progress will be in all, at least at first.
A Depth :: A Philosophy Towards Life
The cultivation of depth is a philosophy for living and learning, but above all, it is an art. It is the art and practice of seeking in all things to get to the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual heart – the true meaning – of the discipline we are intent upon, as well as ourselves. This arises from deep passion, curiosity, and inspiration because it arises from a deep and abiding desire to master something, some inner force that allows us to commit ourselves completely to a path. This requires requires consideration, patience, and gentleness, yes, but also no small quantity of fire, ferocity, and determination.
It is an approach and philosophy towards learning, yes, but also one towards life. One which equips us with the qualities of character, attitude, and mindset necessary to succeed. So that when we pursue and attain depth in one area, the mindset, attitude, and even the themes of our hard-earned skills transfer over into all others areas where we possess skills, and all areas of our lives, for it changes our mentality and our perception of everything.
I find that my progress and skill in one area immediately influences my progress and skill in other areas: music informs my yoga practice refining pace and rhythm, while musical arrangement influences how I arrange my yoga sequences, while language study informs how I study physics which informs how I study music, and yoga informs how I edit my writing. It is this unique complexity to each individual which is what makes what each of us have to say valuable to other people, and to culture as a whole. Provided of course that we actually dedicate ourselves towards quality in our work, on an intellectual, emotional, and spiritual level.
Depth is the bane of superficiality, because once you really begin to approach true depth in something, it is far more difficult to be superficial in general. As we become are aware for the first time the dedication, vulnerability, discipline, and sheer difficulty required to breach this true depth in one single discipline, humility in the face of all possible knowledge and skill a human can develop arises from this new awareness. As well as, in some, the spirit of a challenge to try and develop as much as is possible in this lifetime in as deep and cerebral a fashion as possible, hoping that we can in some way start where we left off our next time around the wheel. For we know that we could live for a thousand lifetimes and still never master every art, maybe not even a single art, as the forefront is always receding.
This awareness of depth is a philosophy and practice of living deeply, with deep engagement, and inner power. These concepts of overcoming limitations while playing on the forefront of growth and development, devotion, cultivating quality, refining our skills and ourselves as people, as well as devotion to our development in some area, while all being central to the consideration of depth, are also a core of important principles for a human being to focus on over the course of their lives for the purpose of always becoming more, always evolving, and engaging more deeply with life.
It is a deeper and consequently more powerful mentality, attitude, and method of training ourselves and approaching what we are learning, and also the learning that we must do as humans in the realm of thought, emotion, and behavior. A focus on these principles results in a movement towards depth, while also fostering a work ethic focused in a more holistic and organic direction which gradually results in a descent into the process of deep, intense practice of our art. Through which our creativity, focus, concentration, attention, presence, satisfaction, abilities and potential all flourish.
