Accounts of the Offspring of Gods and Humans

The myths and legends of Ancient Religion are abound with Accounts of the Offspring of Gods and Man. This is a common theme of myth around the world.

But I am looking for a very unique type of myth of this theme.

A curious situation when we consider what this theme actually means.

We have accounts of great heroes and kings being of divine ancestry — creating a royal lineage — that also gave emperor, pharoah, and monarchs the divine right to rule.

Yet many other accounts tell of monsters being born of this union. The Bible speaks of the Nephilim, who were fair, beautiful, and powerful — they were angels after all — who had to be eradicated and imprisoned because of their alleged moral transgressions.

In an attempt to study this phenomenon in depth, I cultivate here a collection of such relationships throughout ancient religions of the world. A collective of stories to better understand both the dispersal of this theme around the globe and through history, as well as to more clearly see the variations (and connections) between these themes.

Accounts of Human-Divine Lineages

  • The Minotaur of the Labyrinth — A take involving Poseidon, King Minos and his wife, on the island of Crete.

The Preservation of Lineages

What we see as the intent behind these accounts is, fundamentally, the preservation of lineages. Ancestry and stories from the past are two of the most important things to human beings, on average.
