The Balance Between Learning, Practice, and Doing — Art of Learning

I have found that maintaining the Balance Between Learning and Practicing within the Learning Process itself, is among the most challenging aspects of learning.

If you are seeking mastery in one craft, you need to find time to improve knowledge of your craft, practice and train the techniques in your craft, and actually do work in

If we visualize our long-term development on a graph, we want to see a steadily ascending slope move away, up and to the right. There are oscillations along the path. However, the trend is upward.

In order to achieve this in our own path of learning, we need to maintain the balance between Learning, Practicing, and Doing — because those are all required to make long-term progress.

The Breakdown

The Three Pillars of the Learning Process are:

  1. Learning — Intentionally, methodically, and consistently cultivating knowledge of your craft in strict, disciplined manner.
  2. Practicing — This is where you practice the skills that you have learned. Training to master the skills, which are holistic in their array, from fundamental to advanced, in order to develop skill in your craft.
  3. Doing — Building an app, competing in a jiujitsu tournament, running the marathon, starting the business, finishing an album, writing the book. This is what all of your learning and practice culminates in.

Planning This Balance Into Your Day

The number of ways that we can think about arranging our time is extensive. We can think of balancing Learning-Practice-Doing every single day within our daily schedule.

Or we can plan our time relative to a week.

Or we can figure a more flexible learning phase, perhaps more intuitive, where we learn a subject intensively over a few weeks, and then work on a project intensively over a few weeks. Finding the balance over longer spans of time.
