Be What You Are Trying To Be

After over a decade of investigating the minutia of mastery, success, progress, learning, and so on, through direct experience — analyzing my efforts extensively, doing my best to identify, understand, and intellectualize the mindsets and procedures that work for me, and those that don’t.

In essence, that was my process of trying to understand these subjects within the realm that I call Personal Mastery. Ironically, in the end I discovered that it was all unnecessary. Success, Mastery, Learning — you don’t need to understand the “science” behind them in order to do them. Indeed, I discovered that success stories are often reactive, relatively messy, consistent action, rather than perfectly-planned and methodical approaches.

The solution that I ultimately arrived at was simple:

Just Be What You Are Trying To Be.

Literally, just be what you are trying to be. That is the secret. From the first day of your path towards something, you have the ability to completely embody that lifestyle from day one. To be the person on that path, from the very beginning.

No Hesitation. No Holding Back. Complete Immersion. From the onset.

It is interesting that I understood this intuitively when I was younger.

If you are trying to become a web developer, begin creating your online portfolio on the very first day of your efforts. And simply begin posting programs that you have created, and digital architecture of your design.

Humans have a tendency to put things in the way, to overcomplicate and overthink things. The fact that most ambitions are objectively “complicated” (since most paths have a ton of variables, moving parts, and innumerable steps) is actually beside the point. We walk the path just by showing up every day, and moving through what is in our way.

We slow ourselves down when we try to understand everything — our knowledge makes us hesitate. The attempt to perfectly understand everything…
