The Divine Beings of Ancient Mesopotamia had a profound impact on the religions of the ancient — and modern — world. In a very real way, they helped shape an important part of our collective worldview.
It is more accurate to say that the religions of ancient Mesopotamia themselves had a profound impact… Nonetheless, the divine beings were central to the narratives and worldviews, around which stories, myths, parables, morals, beliefs and tales of the religion itself are woven.
Moreover, the people worshipped them in ancient times.
It was in this world that first Judaism, and next, Christianity, were born. It is actually appropriate to say that core mythologies within Judaism, claim descent from Sumerian and Akkadian tradition specifically. Meaning that Abrahamic Tradition is an evolution, with Sumerian roots.
The divine beings of the Ancient Near East are:
- The Anuna / Anunnaki — are the literal Old Gods of the Old World (called Anunnaki in Akkadian by the Babylonians). Among their number are Anu, Enlil, Enki, Inanna, Utu, and a few others, the greatest gods of Sumer, who are known by many names by many cultures, and can be found in many ancient religions (including Greek and Egyptian).
- Primordial Beings of Mesopotamia — these are the progenitors of the Titans in Greek Mythology (or perhaps and older version of the same tradition, given their extensive similarities, and the fact that the Greek people originally migrated from the Near East, as did the majority of Europeans. In Sumerian, they are Apsu,. (We will discuss these thoroughly in .) I would also consider Tiamat a primordial being of Sumerian, Akkadian, and later Babylonian religion. The force of chaos personified, leader of a horde of monsters that shaped the early world.

The Divine Beings of Mesopotamia and the Near East had a profound influence on religions during ancient times, reigning for more than 3000 years. We literally see it everywhere. (It is so prevalent that it becomes strong evidence for the Lost Civilization and Ancestral Tradition hypotheses.)
