The Effect of Climate Change On Large Mammals

A new study in Iran found that climate change has significantly altered the migration patterns of large mammals in the Central Alborz Protected Area — a protected region within the Alborz Mountains of central Iran. [1]

This region has experience an temperature increase of about 4.5° between 1999-2022 during which this study took place. [1]

Over a 23-year period, researchers observed earlier and increased migrations of Caspian red deer, wild goats, and wild boars due to rising temperatures and changes in vegetation. They also observed bears, who did not exhibit the same changes in migration.

To protect these vulnerable mammal populations, the study’s authors recommend expanding the protected area and implementing proactive conservation strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
