First, Prepare Yourself For Life

One of the things I have learned is that we must Prepare For Life First, as our most fundamental priority. On the one hand I mean a mental preparation. But even more fundamentally, there is a physical preparation that we should ideally master until it is unconscious.

In practice, there are a fundamental array of tasks that we must take care of. Period. These tasks are really the fundamental procedures that we need to operate in the world. The stock equipment of a character in a video game. From the mundane, to the monotonous, to the primal — these are the fundamental things we need to function.

  • Food & Water — We need food and water. At a basic level, we need this sustenance in order to survive. More than this, we need our diet down to a T.
  • Shelter — We need shelter. I have lived in a tent. I am building a trailer for my truck to live in, a mobile home. Wherever we are, we need a safe sheltered space to live in.
  • Sleep —
  • Clothes & Laundry —
  • Basic Hygiene — Shit, shower, shave, brush teeth.
  • Bag Packed — Always be ready to go.
  • Training — Basic physical training — PT — is an elemental part of life. It doesn’t matter if your physical activity is lifting & stretching, jiujitsu, running, yoga, climbing. The only thing that matters is a basic level of taking care of the body, and in doing so, preparing yourself for life.
  • Protection —
  • Transportation — Ideally, we need wheels. To a homeless person, a bike is an unrivalled blessing. In some cases, it allows you to get a job in the first place.
  • Finances —

Preparing Ourselves For Life

The Mentality

At a fundamental level, to prepare yourself for life is a mentality. A mentality of being ready for anything, at any time. Good or bad. Opportunities or obstacles. (Which often are the same thing.) Success or Failure.

None of these binary options have any real relevance to the fundamentals of our lives. Good things happen, you still go to work the next day. You still have to eat and drink. You still have to ensure your diet is healthy (in general) and that you take care of your body.

The experiences of life do not change the fundamentals of life. The things that everybody needs to do to keep our hearts beating, and to move through, and operate within, the modern world. Its just how it is.

More importantly, we shouldn’t allow life to effect these fundamentals.

Introduction

Imagine that you are always running around doing things in the morning — and always running late. Compared to the person who has their bag packed, food prepped, clothes laid out, and everything organized the night before.
