Henna For Hair
Henna powder can be used as hair dye — not dye exactly, because it stains the hair, rather than dying it.

Hair Wrapping
It is generally recommended to wrap your head/hair in plastic wrap or Saran wrap after applying henna, while you leave it in your hair. This helps with Moisture Retention, Heat Retention, and Mess Prevention during the hours that henna remains in your hair, and helps to provide a deeper, richer color.
Moisture Retention
Henna needs to stay moist to properly release its dye — it shouldn’t dry out.
Heat Retention
Warmth from your head helps to further activate the henna, and release the dye, resulting in a richer color.
Henna & Indigo
It is generally better to apply Henna then Indigo, in a 2-step process. Especially if you are trying to achieve darker hair tones (like black). This process is better for color control and longevity of the hair color.
Applying henna first (for 10-12h) allows it to bond to the hair, which creates a deep base for the indigo to adhere to (since it bonds to, and reacts with, henna).
Mixing Henna and Indigo in the same process can result in a greenish tint to the hair (especially if you are covering grey hair).
Indigo
You should apply indigo within 72 hours (three days) of applying henna for best results in two-step henna-indigo hair dyeing process. [1] For optimial vibrancy, color uptake, and longevity, it is best to apply indigo as soon as possible after rinsing out the henna.
Color Oxidation, Dye Uptake, and Color Consistency
The red color from henna continues to oxidize and deverlop for about 72 hours after it is applied. [1] This is called color oxidation. Applying henna indigo when this window ensures that the henna has prepared the hair, so that indigo can bind effectively to the henna stain, to create a long-lasting dark color. (High dye uptake.)
Color Consistency
APplying Indigo late within 72-hour window might lead to less vibrant color that doesn’t stick well, especially with stubbrn gray or resistant hair strands. [1]
Mix Indigo
Mix indigo powder with warm water and apply to towel-dried or damp hair. The amount of indigo that you need depends on the length of your hair, thickness, and texture. THe general guideline is:
- Short Hair (ear length) — 40-100 grams (1/2 – 1 cups)
- Medium Hair (shoulder length) — 100-200 grams (1-2 cups)
- Long Hair (waist or hip length) — 200-300+ grams
- Thick / Curly Hair — Add an extray 50g for every 6″ of hair.
Tips
Err On The SIde OF Too MUch
Consitency Is Key
Thick Paste. Add liquid slowly until the right amount of water is added (the right consistency). Avoid runiness.
Instead of water, you can also use certain types of coffee or tea.
Apply INdigo
Apply indigo using the same process as henna. Gloves. Brush.
After it has been applied, cover your head with suran wrap, and a bonnet. (Ideally, to trap the heat.) Same as with Henna. Then leave it on for about 1–2 hours.
Rinse Indigo
Rinse out the indigo dye with cool-to-lukewarm water until water runs clear.
Allow To Settle
Allow your hair to settle. FInal color will continue to develop over next 72 hours, so recommended to avoid washing with shampoo or conditioner, or apply oils during this period. Allow the color to develop deeply first, then wash it and hydrate it further.
