Introduction To Mastery

Mastery is in and of itself a rather abstract and challenging topic just to approach. It can be considered through the lens of the mastery of a singular art, skill, or discipline — a microcosm of the whole. Or it can be considered as the Mastery of the Self where it becomes Personal Development, Personal Mastery, and even Spiritual Development.

I consider mastery as all of these elements together as one.

Using An Art, Craft, or Discipline As A Lens For Mastery

It is hard for me to distinguish between what is Personal Mastery and what is Mastery of a Skill. In my experience you find all of the same Principles of Mastery in the pursuit of achieving mastery of a skill, as you would in seeking mastery over yourself.

At a certain point on the path of mastery, you begin to realize that the flaws in your abilities, reflect limitations within you. For example, if you are looking for refinement in your skills, cleaning up your process, you are literally addressing minute flaws that you discover in your abilities. Slight sloppiness. Too much. Not enough. Too fast or slow. Not enough attention to detail.

In this way, I do believe that you can master yourself by achieving mastery of something, using your vocation as an extension of yourself. Using it as a tool of expression and self-development. While in reality, you are also keenly aware of the fact that this art is but a mode, and what you are actually training is far deeper, and more challenging.
