Sky Father
Sky Father is a term from comparative mythology for the recurring concept within religions of the world for a sky god that the people name with respect and reverence, “father”.
The sky father is usually the progenitor of the gods, the father of the pantheon itself. Often described as a reigning or former King of the Gods.
Concept of “sky father” can also include Sun gods with similar characteristics. The Ancient Egyptian Ra, Aten, or Horus for example, or Sumerian An.
The Earth Mother is the counterpart of the Sky Father. It is often the case that while the Sky Father created humans, watches over, protects, and punishes from above, the Earth Mother nurtures humanity as the Earth herself.
“Sky Father” is a direct translation of the Vedic Dyaus Pita. Where dyaus means “sky”, and pita means “father”. Vedic Dyaus Pita is directly related to the Greek Zeus Pater, and the Jupiter as well. This is tied in with the Celtic Dis Pater also.
All three of these gods are both etymologically linked, in their names, as well as mythologically connected through the deity itself. The Vedic, Greek, and Roman people all descended (culturally, linguistically, and probably ethnically as well) from the same Indo-European ancestor peoples. As did their respective religions.
There was an original Proto-Indo-European god that Dyaus Pita, Zeus Pater, Jupiter, and Dis Pater all descended from. An original story.
Notes
- Numerous parallels adduced from outside Indo-European mythology. Nonetheless, exception exist (such as in Egyptian mythology where Nut is the sky mother and Geb the earth father).
