Zero-Point Energy

All of the atoms in the universe can be understood not as isolated, individual particles, but as fluctuating fields of energy. This means that every atom, of every molecule, composing everything, all matter — literally every thing — can be equivalently understood and described as complex fluctuating fields of energy.

At least this is the perspective of Quantum Field Theory (QFT). In addition to everything in the universe existing as fluctuating fields of energy, the vast seemingly empty space that exists between planets, stars, galaxies, and perhaps, universes, is also filled with energy.

It turns out that it is infinitely dense with energy.

The universe is pervaded by energy imbuing the space all around us. This is a direct consequence of the fluctuating fields of all things that ultimately exist suspended in the vacuum of space. In particular, their electromagnetic fields, including all energy radiated into space (the various wavelengths of photons of light).

This energy turns out to be infinite — or, infinite for all intents and purposes, at least — and is required to be renormalized.

Furthermore, because of Mass Energy Equivalence established by Einstein, technically this infinite energy available in the vacuum — vacuum energy or zero-point energy — can be converted into mass. Technically it is mass already. (This is one of the indications that We Live In A Black Hole.)

The Basics

Evidence

Zero-point energy is the best explanation that we have for a number of physical phenomena that we have experimentally verified, such as the Casimir Effect, an observed force exerted on metal plates in a unique device. This force is the result of vacuum energy – an infinite vacuum energy that exists in the space all around us – that it is a field .

In many practical applictions ZPE

For many years Zero-Point Energy was not well-understood, and many scientists … Indeed, in many applications of ZPE Scientists, including the great Max Planck, thought that zero-point energy would never be observed in experiments. [2] Yet today we have a range of experimental results indicating forces and phenomena that cannot be explained unless we factor in the effects of ZPE.
