Homo Sapiens

H. sapiens males weighed 65 kg (143 lb) and were 1.7 m (5’7″) tall, on average. Females were 54 kg (119 lb) and 1.6 m (5’3″). [1]

Homo sapiens had larger brains and used more complex tools than earlier humans. Other humans that were members of sibling species of homo sapiens (Homo Erectus, Neanderthal, Homo Heidelbergensis) were sophisticated in their own right, and used tools, but not quite at the same level of sophistication … even back then.

Tools included blades, awls, axes, and microliths of antler, bone, ivory and stone. [1]

Homo sapiens are believed to be the only hominids to have developed the use of language. However, recent discoveries of our significant interbreeding with Neanderthal suggest that we had the ability to communicate with language, therefore perhaps not the only humans to speak. (While certain modern ethnicities might only retain a 1–4% of the Neanderthal genome, that is significant.)

With that being said, the overall advancement that made homo sapiens special is our development of language, use of complex tools, create shelters of varying degrees of permanence, and store food underground for preservation. [1] Language, rituals, and art were all created. [1]
